Stepping Up: The College Responsibility

OK, so as many of you know, all of us at The College Column support having the time of your life when you are in college. There is nothing wrong with that. We have done the same, but I want to make it clear that when it is needed, we at The College Column are also responsible and want to share the importance of this with you.

So in college, you have plenty of opportunities to get crazy and have a good time. You will also come across situations in which you need to “step up” and put being crazy aside for a minute. Here are a couple examples:

Some of The College Column Staff recently had a transfer student move in with them. Not long after the beginning of the semester this transfer’s dad passed away. Nobody was around the apartment when he found out. He began to drink. In fact he finished a fifth of tequila in less than an hour. This is when The College Column staff made it back to the apartment and found out what had happened. They realized that the death of his father alone, even without the alcohol, made this difficult. Then when a fifth of tequila was added to the situation it became even worse. They knew it was important to keep an eye on this guy even though they barely knew him and that’s exactly what they did. We at The College Column hope you would all do the same.

Another situation The College Column staff came across one night is one that unfortunately is way too common. After a long night of partying we got back to campus to find a guy being abusive toward his girlfriend in the parking lot. A few groups of people just walked by and didn’t pay much attention to what was going on. We decided to wait a while to make sure things did not get out of hand. When he began to get carried away we stepped in to calm him down and separate the two. We at The College Column hope that you would not be one to just walk by, but do the right thing and make sure everything is under control.

As fun as college can be sometimes there are situations that you will be put in that cause you to make a choice. We hope that you do take advantage of those opportunities to have the time of your life, but when you do come across a situation to make a choice, we at The College Column hope you make the right choice!
