Decorate Your Dorm Room: Black Light Edition

Most people find that in college a dorm room just seems so much better if it is well decorated. I’ve seen a lot of pretty common decorations such as posters, flags, newspaper headlines etc. But we have an idea that will set you apart from these basic and boring decorations!

Every so often we at The College Column like to host mini raves. We began doing this out of our dorm room freshman year. Everybody knows a rave can’t be a rave without an awesome atmosphere and great lighting. We found some cheap and effective ways to do this in college.

We started with a black light. We were able to pick one up at Walmart for like 5 bucks which is pretty reasonable. We ended up getting several just because they are a lot of fun. The next thing on your list at the store is laundry detergent. Yes, I know it’s an odd combination but trust me here. You need to find a detergent with a bleach additive. Sometimes that’s hard to find so another option is to just one of the small cheap bottles of bleach and then a cheap bottle of regular detergent.

That’s all you really need to get started. You will need to mix the bleach and detergent and test it under the black light to see what mix shows up best under the light. Once you had the mixture down its time to go crazy. Put some on your hand and begin to write on the walls wherever you want. We had words and pictures and even footprints on the ceiling! Not only does this look amazing when you are done but it actually smells pretty good too! Good luck and have fun!
