Nokia
has launched the Lumia 610 in India for Rs 12,999 . The Lumia 610 was
announced back in February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona with
the intention of bringing the Windows Phone platform to much affordable price
points. For this purpose, Microsoft introduced the Windows Phone Tango
update which lowered the hardware requirements of the platform including
reducing the RAM requirements to 256MB from 512MB.
The
Lumia 610 sports a 3.7-inch display with a resolution of 800×480 pixels and
uses a Qualcomm 800MHz processor along with 256MB of RAM and 8GB of storage.
Additionally, the device also features 5-megapixel camera, however it does not
have 720p recording capabilities. Additionally, it will also become the first
Lumia smartphone in India to get the Mix Radio app. The device will also come
preloaded with Nokia Camera extras which provides features like Smart Group
Shot, Action Shot, Panorama Shot and Self Timer. The device will be available
in four colors – Cyan, Magenta, White and Black.
Considering
Nokia has scrapped efforts on the Meltemi platform, which was supposed to power
its low-cost, affordable smartphones, the Finnish handset vendor will have to
rely on the likes on the Lumia 610 to be able to compete with low-end Android
smartphones. However, to do so Nokia will have to bring down the pricing
further.
Earlier
this month, Nokia CEO, Stephen Elop, acknowledged the need to bring smartphones
priced lower than the Lumia 610 and revealed that Nokia was already
developing them. He also mentioned receiving “specific support” from Microsoft
in this regard, though we are not sure whether it was related to optimizing
Windows Phone for low-end hardware specifications or something else.
